Ulen-Hitterdal Students Visit the Ulen Museum
These 3rd graders enjoyed touring the Ulen Museum recently. They had fun looking at the old-time school room, veterans' uniforms, and pioneer living room. We welcome groups, big and small - just let us know.
Berry Pickers
This beautiful watercolor painting by the late Mae Forsythe shows a family picking berries years ago near their farm at rural Ulen. Prints are available for sale at the Ulen Museum in 14 x 17" and 8" x 10".

The Ulen Museum is home to one of the
OLDEST QUILTS
in MINNESOTA:
THE LANE QUILT
The Historic Lane Quilt
This quilt was created from a wedding dress worn by the bride, Margaret Phoenix Lane on November 22, 1769, in Somerset County, Province of New Jersey in British Colonial America. Made from linen from the flax grown on the family's farm, the quilt was passed down four generations and was carried across the United States as pioneers moved west.
The Lane Quilt measures 74" x 90", and is made from a quilted petticoat of the wedding dress' skirt. The delicate hand-stitching shows the love and dedication that went into every stitch. The pink quilted border frames the beautiful blue center. A muslin tag was added to the corner of the quilt by Mrs. Lane's great, great granddaughter, Mary Garlock Pennington. It reads: "From Grandmother Lane's Wedding Skirt, Married November 23,1769. The blue silk was quilted by herself." The quilt was donated to the Ulen Museum in 1969 by Blache Evers Warren, a great, great, great granddaughter of Margaret Phoenix Lane.
"It has been a fascinating experience to examine and research this quilt. Following its story has led me through details of the American Revolutionary War to life in New Netherlands (Now New York and New Jersey). Agriculture, politics, and world trade in the 18th century are all contained in this bit of linen and wool." Kim Baird, Textile Historian, pictured above with the Lane Quilt.
When you visit the Ulen Museum, you'll see the lovely and historic Lane Quilt. Follow its unique journey from Colonial America to rural Minnesota.
